How to Read Our Scoring System

A complete breakdown of the 10-dimension scorecard used in every Shisha Notes review — what each score means and how to use them.

Why a 10-Dimension Scorecard?

A single star rating can't capture the nuances of a shisha flavor. A tobacco might taste amazing but only last 30 minutes. Another might be mild and long-lasting — perfect for some smokers, boring for others. Our 10-dimension scorecard lets you evaluate flavors based on what actually matters to you.

Every approved review on Shisha Notes includes scores across all 10 dimensions, rated from 1 to 10. These individual scores are aggregated across all reviews to give each product a detailed profile, not just a single number. Think of it as a flavor fingerprint.

Overall Score

The overall score (1-10) is the reviewer's holistic assessment of the flavor. It's not an average of the other scores — it's the reviewer's subjective bottom line. "Would I buy this again?" A 7 or above generally means the reviewer would recommend it. A 5 is neutral. Below 5 means they were disappointed.

When browsing products, the overall score shown on cards is the average of all approved reviews. Keep in mind that a product with a 7.5 from 20 reviews is more reliable than a 9.0 from a single review.

Flavor Accuracy

Does the flavor taste like what the brand says it should taste like? A "Blueberry Muffin" that actually tastes like blueberry muffin scores high. One that tastes like generic sweetness scores low.

This score helps you trust product descriptions. High accuracy means fewer surprises — what you see is what you get. Some brands are known for extremely accurate flavor profiles while others take more creative liberties.

Flavor Intensity

How strong is the actual flavor? A 10 means the flavor is bold and immediately recognizable from the first draw. A 1 means you can barely taste it. This is different from strength (which relates to nicotine/buzz) — intensity is purely about how pronounced the taste is.

Beginners often prefer moderate intensity (5-7). Very high intensity can be overwhelming in long sessions, while very low intensity can feel like you're not tasting much at all.

Sweetness

How sweet is the smoke? This is largely determined by the amount of molasses or glycerin in the tobacco. High sweetness scores indicate a dessert-like, candy-like experience. Low sweetness means a drier, more natural tobacco taste.

This is a descriptive score, not a quality judgment. Some people love sweet shisha, others prefer something more subdued. Use this score to match flavors to your personal sweet tooth.

Cooling

How much cooling sensation does the flavor produce? This is primarily relevant for mint and menthol-containing flavors. A 10 means an icy, almost numbing cold. A 1 means no cooling at all.

If you love that frosty feeling, filter for high cooling scores. If you find menthol unpleasant, look for flavors scoring 1-2 in this dimension. Many non-mint flavors will simply score a 1 here.

Strength Perception

How strong does the tobacco feel in terms of nicotine buzz and body? This is the reviewer's subjective experience of how hard the tobacco hits. A 10 is a heavy, buzzy smoke that seasoned smokers might enjoy. A 1 is feather-light with virtually no buzz.

This score is especially important for beginners. If you're sensitive to nicotine, look for products that consistently score 1-4 in strength perception. Remember that this score is influenced by the reviewer's setup — their strength experience may differ from yours.

Heat Tolerance

How forgiving is the tobacco when you apply too much heat? High heat tolerance means the flavor stays clean even when you overheat it slightly. Low heat tolerance means it burns and turns harsh quickly.

For beginners who are still learning heat management, high heat tolerance (7+) is your best friend. These forgiving tobaccos will give you a good session even if your coal placement isn't perfect. As you improve your technique, you can venture into more temperamental options.

Longevity

How long does the flavor last before it fades or turns ghosty? A 10 means the flavor holds strong for well over an hour. A 1 means it fades within 15-20 minutes. Longevity matters if you enjoy long, leisurely sessions.

Some brands are known for exceptional longevity (Tangiers, for example), while others front-load their flavor and fade faster. If you tend to smoke for an hour or more, prioritize flavors with longevity scores of 6 or above.

Solo Suitability

How enjoyable is this flavor on its own, without mixing? A 10 means it's a complete, satisfying experience by itself. A low score means the flavor really shines as part of a mix but is one-dimensional or lacking alone.

Beginners should start with high solo suitability scores (7+) since mixing adds complexity you don't need when you're still learning. As you get more experienced, low solo suitability flavors become interesting building blocks for custom blends.

Beginner Friendliness

This is the bottom line for newcomers. How suitable is this product for someone who's relatively new to shisha? A high score means the flavor is forgiving, approachable, easy to pack, and enjoyable without expert technique. A low score means it requires experience to get right.

This dimension considers everything: strength, heat tolerance, pack difficulty, and how intuitive the flavor is. If you're building your first rotation of flavors, filter by beginner friendliness of 7 or higher and you'll be in safe territory. Products that score well here are also great recommendations when introducing friends to hookah.
